Garment Sets

In terms of actual Victorian dressmaking, 1/2 inch metal or brass buttons were commonly used on tight-fitting bodices, sleeves, and jacket fronts:

  • Bodices & Jacket Fronts: Victorian women's bodices (especially in the 1870s–1890s) were closely fitted and featured long, dense rows of tiny buttons running from neck to waistline. A typical bodice alone could take 12 to 24 buttons down the front.

  • Sleeves & Cuffs: Tight fitted cuffs often featured 3 to 6 matching buttons per wrist.

  • Vest & Waistcoats: Men's Victorian waistcoats usually took 5 to 8 buttons.

Peak Era (1870s–1900s): Two-piece brass construction with integrated self-shanks became exceptionally popular during the mid-to-late Victorian era. Manufacturers developed specialized stamping presses that could form the entire back plate and shank loop out of a single brass sheet, eliminating the need to hand-solder a wire loop.
